I used to be a lyrics purist, in that if I didn't understand them, I couldn't really appreciate the song. I think I'm through that phase, but I still love it when bands can write truly "together" lyrics.
Note that I said "understand", not necessarily agree with. I don't really care about what you're saying, so long as I do know what it is that you're saying. As far as the original question is concerned, I would tend to treat vocals as an instrument (and from a technical standpoint, it *is* just another instrument). I guess, then, the whole of a band minus vocals is "more important" than just vocals -- but it's much like the "What's the most important part in a car?" question, 'cause what's the right answer there?

That's nice, but those axles aren't doing anything if you haven't got any wheels. And even if they are doing something, you can't control it without a steering wheel... etc, etc. :-P
